Blåvandshuk Lighthouse

Blåvandshuk Lighthouse

Blåvandshuk lighthouse is situated at Denmark's westernmost point and is a landmark for the whole area. The white lighthouse is 39 metres high. The lamp is 55 metres above sea level. The light from the lighthouse is visible 23 nautical miles (42km.) away.

The lighthouse was built in 1900 to replace a smaller lighthouse dating from 1888. Blåvandshuk lighthouse was built to warn the ships of Horns Reef, which extends 40 km. out into the sea west of Blåvandshuk. Hrons Reef used to be called "The devils horn" because the reef had claimed numerous sailors in bad weather and it was regarded as one of the most dangerous reefs in the world.

The lighthouse is still in operation and is now fully automatic. It used to function with the aid of a clockwork mechanism which can still be seen at the bottom of the tower. The four ton lens rotates in a bearing of mercury and the lamp's output is 1.000 watts. The light radiating through the lens is equivalent to the output from 180.000 small candles. Blåvandshuk lighthouse blinks three times every twentieth second

The Atlantic Wall

The area around the lighthouse has numerous bunkers from the Second Wolrd War-a part of the Atlantic Wall. The bunker position at Blåvand was called the Buffalo Postion and it functioned as a radar station. The bunkers can be examined from the outside. The bunker "Tirpitz position" now also functions as a museum.
