The churches


There are over 30 churches in Varde and district, each with its own history and special features.

Sct. Jacobi Church in Varde

Sct. Jacobi church is at the marketplace in Varde. The church is believed to have been built between 1150 and 1225, and was dedicated to the apostle James. Read more

Aal Church in Oksbøl

Aal church, dating from the 1100s, can be visited in Oksbøl. The church is famous for its frescoes, in particular the very well-known knights’ frieze, which is unique in European church art. Read more 

The Oksby Churches in Oksby and Mosevrå

The churches in Oksby and Mosevrå are built from the same set of drawings and are therefore almost identical. The churches were consecrated in 1891 and are still in use. Read more

Børsmose Church

The church is idyllically situated between Grærup, Børsmose and Kærgård. It was built on the edge of the first glacial coastline. Read more 

The churches in Varde and district

Many of the churches are open to the public and definitely worth a visit. Most date from the 1200s, but there are also some which are only 100 years old.

Divine services and church concerts

Concerts are arranged throughout summer in a number of churches and there are divine services in German. A summary of these arrangements and opening times of the individual churches can be found from the local tourist offices.
